Abstract


Sheng has been one of Chinese ancient reed pipe instruments, with a long history of more than2400years. It has gone through periods of brilliance and recession in the process of the development of Chinese musical culture. And there have been numerous and complicated transformations in its shape and structure. In the1950’s sheng ushered in its second peak period of development.However, if there were no improvements in musical instruments, the performing arts would not develop frequently, and vice verse. Actually with its continual improvements, musical instruments have increasingly become perfect playing a foundation and providing more space for performing techniques developing.Since new China was founded, diversified kinds of improved sheng has sprung out. It is believed the when musical instruments being improved, more attention should be paid to their practicability as well as agreement with aesthetic need of Chinese tradition. The so-called national music is required to embody chinese ethnic and folk music, and the music playing instruments need to inherit performance characteristics of national tradition. When extending the traditional playing techniques, they demonstrates a trend of diversified forms of development.This essay tries to comb and categorize all the shengs improved after1950’s, mainly analzing the practical value and scientific significance of37improved Sheng. Additionally, it explores into the playing techniques of37improved Sheng from the viewpoint of "Huanfeng"----one of the most famous modern sheng sole works.
