Abstract


From a cultural-historical perspective, this dissertation discusses the way how people in ancient China recognized and understood the time and how to deal with the problem of life according to The Book of Changes (Zhou Yi). As the author focuses on the change of concept of time and the experience of time across cultures and history, the concept time discussed in this dissertation is different from those analyzed in philosophical, modern physical and psychological works. In this case, The Book of Changes is not only a canon work, but also a manifestation of culture itself, which has been interpreted for two thousand years, and which has devetoped a thinking-model and tradition impacting everyone.There are three points being emphasized in this dissertation:(1) the concentration of the first two chapters includes two parts, Yi Jing and the Commentaries of Yi Jing (Yi Zhuan) which are being discussed separately. Their differences and influence are analyzed in detail;(2) the interpretations of The Book of Changes in the history are also taken into consideration, and are being thoroughly elaborated on from two perspectives. These two perspectives are also the two traditional ways of interpretation of the Book of Changes, which are "Xiangshu" and "Yili". The former concerning with the time is to associate the Astronomy with the System of The Book of the Changes, and the latter is to legitimate people’s self-cultivation and social practices according to natural principles, which is the main concern of the third chapter;(3) nowadays, with the world becoming a global village and with the discussion of the concept of time in other cultures capturing scholars’attention, in Chapter Four, the context of Jung’s "Synchronicity" and the relation with his understanding of the concept of time in The Book of Changes are being discussed. In Chapter Five, the comparative studies between The Book of Changes and Whitehead’s Process Philosophy made by some scholars are mentioned.In conclusion, the concept of time in The Book of Changes is a reflection on how people in ancient China experienced and recognized the world and how they sought the proper way to practice and to find the significance of life. This tradition is not dead but still continued as the basis of our cultural life, and may also be inspirable for peoples in other cultures.
