"Ming Dynasty" in Tibetan Buddhism in Beijing - a case study of "Yan Xing Lu" as the center

Abstract


Korean dynasty had always been great importance to relations with China, especially the Li Dynasty which looked the Ming Dynasty as the superior empire. Li Dynasty constantly selected envoys which proficient in Chinese culture to the Ming Dynasty, and they recorded what they saw and heard along the route into their travel notes, these notes are called "Records of Pilgrimage to Peking". The records cover the political, economic, military, life, religion and other aspects of the Ming Dynasty, and also involve the Beijing Tibetan Buddhism. Tibetan Buddhism had spread to Beijing, as Kublai Khan moved the capital to Beijing, and it had been further spread and development in the Ming Dynasty, and the Beijing Tibetan Buddhism had been recorded in "Records of Pilgrimage to Peking " by the Korea envoy.According to the different emphasis of research, the previous studies of the Beijing Tibetan Buddhism and Yanxinglu can be divided into two areas:used the domestic historical materials to study Tibetan Buddhism in Beijing, or concentrated in a Yanxing work for analysis. This article compiles about Tibetan Buddhism historical data from "Records of Pilgrimage to Peking" in Yanxinglu Complete Works, and supplements the demonstration of Tibetan Buddhism historical data in Ming Dynasty. The author hopes this article can make up for the lack of official history and be breakthrough in the study. "Records of Pilgrimage to Peking" is the collective name of the works which left by Korean envoys to the Ming Dynasty. The first chapter systematically discusses the edition, the main content and the authors of the records, and the composition of the Korean Mission, the route to Ming Dynasty.The spread and development of Tibetan Buddhism in Beijing in the Ming Dynasty, not only be recorded in history books and sketchbooks of the mainland recorded, but also be recorded by the Korea envoys. The second chapter systematically sorts out the Tibetan Buddhist historical data from "Records of Pilgrimage to Peking", researches and elaborates the temple of Tibetan Buddhism in Beijing, Tibetan Buddhist tributary monks and their activity place.The third chapter analyzes the reason for Korean envoys misunderstanding to the Buddhist beliefs in the Ming Dynasty and the Tibetan Buddhist monks, and points out that the main reason is the influence of their religious idea and Hua Yi concept. This chapter also introduced the value of Tibetan Buddhism historical data in "Records of Pilgrimage to Peking’.
