Abstract

According to the existing researches, the present study investigates1123adolescent studentsaged13-24in Nanjing by using a research method of literature analysis, interview andquestionnaire. The instruments include Adolescents’ Basic Information Scale (self-compiled),Urban Adolescent’s Internet Service Use Preference Scale (self-compiled), Social Avoidance andDistress Scale, Adolescent Students’Self-Worth Scale and so on. The study covers investigating thesituation of urban adolescent’s internet use, realizing the current condition of urban adolescent’scommunication and the status of their self-worth, and analyzing the demographic differences. It alsoexplores primarily the influences of internet on urban adolescent’s communication and analysespreliminarily the role which self-worth plays in the influences. This paper is intended to explainurban adolescent’s communicative attitude and behavior in the internet environment. It’s convenientto inculcate and guidance the adolescent’s communicative behavior. It helps to promote theirhealthy growth.By way of statistic analysis, the conclusions are as follows:(1) Urban adolescent’s internet service use preferences are constituted with three dimensions,which are internet social service preference, internet entertainment and information servicepreference, internet trade service preference. The scale with good reliability and validity is suitablefor further study.(2) Urban adolescent’s network age is48.00±32.48months. The online time is13.00±13.68hours per week. They are more inclined to use internet entertainment and information service. Thefrequency of using trade service is the lowest. Some adolescent tend to avoid associating withothers and feel distressed in social activities.(3) There are significant demographical differences in internet use and communication.Self-worth is influenced significantly by school-age, grade and whether the only-child or not. Thereare interactive influences between school type and school-age on online time and trade service usepreference.(4) Urban adolescent’s internet use shows significant negative effect on social avoidance anddistress. Internet entertainment and information service use preference, trade service use preferenceand network age display significant positive effect on self-worth. Social avoidance and distress share significant negative correlation with self-worth.(5) Proper internet use displays significant and positive effect on urban adolescent’scommunication. Urban adolescent’s network age and internet social service use preference revealsignificant negative predictions to social distress. The older urban adolescent’s network age is, thelower the degree of social distress is. It is same with internet social service use preference. What’smore, the effective of social service use preference is lager than that of network age. Network agehas subtle influence on social avoidance. The older urban adolescent’s network age is, the lower thedegree of social avoidance is. Social service use preference displays significant negative predictionsto social avoidance. The greater urban adolescent’s internet social service use preference is, thelower the degree of social avoidance is.(6) Urban adolescent’s self-worth can play a regulatory role in the influence of internet use oncommunication. Urban adolescent’s self-worth can play a regulatory role in the influence ofnetwork age and internet service use preference on social avoidance. It also can play absolutely aregulatory role in the influence of internet use on social distress.The mental mechanism of urban adolescent’s communicative attitude and behavior in theinternet environment can be summarized as follows: Proper internet use shows significant andpositive effect on urban adolescent’s social avoidance and distress. Self-worth plays a regulatoryrole in the effects.
