Abstract


This article aims at exploring the relationship between the Party System andCabinet Stability, which means it wants to examine whether Party System is one ofthe most important causes that results that Cabinet duration so diverse in differentcountries. If yes, be chosen by country which Party System can make Cabinet morestable and survive longer.As the electoral system and party system having no clearcausal link, this paper will take majority election system and proportionalrepresentation election system, multi-party party system and two-party party systemas two main independent variables, cabinet duration of The New ParliamentaryDemocracies as the main dependent variable. By examining previous works onCabinet Duration,，this article use two different criteria to calculating the length of thecabinet, which are the changes in ruling party and the changes in the cabinetcomposition (Government Change Index). Finally，applying regression analysis andParametric Survival Model analysis, this research will obtain Cabinet survival hazardrates under different electoral systems and party systems in.According to the results, The New Parliamentary Democracies chose pluralitysystem and two-party system of government cabinet can survive longer and morestable than proportional system and multi-party system of government cabinet，which as same as modern democratic political common sense. However, this resultwill revert as time goes by. Meanwhile in order to explain reasons of the diversity ofnew democratic countries cabinet duration, party system is a stronger variable thanelectoral system by the research of this dissertation
