Abstract


Appellation is a very vigorous elements in social communication and it is also a mirror of dynamic language. Since language itself is closely correlated with the economy, appellation directly embodies the relations of covariation between social languages and global economy. Economic boom is driving the rapid development and extensive study of appellation. On the contrary, the spread of proper social appellation will react on the economy and oil the wheels.The thesis is concerned with the comparative study on pragmatic function of Chinese and English widely-used social appellation. A great number of sociologists and linguists at home and abroad have done many researches in this field from perspectives like anthropology, sociolinguistics, pragmatics and cross-cultural communication. Employing contrastive methodology, this thesis develops an analysis of the appellation to obtain a complete understanding of the difference of English and Chinese. Only with this comprehensive analysis from various perspectives can we explore the nature of the appellation and establish the rules of the appropriate use. Each nation in the world bears its own system of appellation. The appellation, what’s more, in each language contains the strong cultural characteristics and pragmatic features. This thesis attempts to make a systematic debate on the pragmatic functions of the appellation from the aspects of illocutionary function, interpersonal function and cultural function. The comparison of different categories, pragmatic functions and cultural functions of English and Chinese appellation can help us have a further understanding of the pragmatic difference of appellation from their cultural origins. There are deep cultural and societal roots of the pragmatics differences of appellation. The concept of equality and Confucius’ideas, individualism and collectivism, power and solidarity are essential causes of pragmatic differences in appellation.The thesis unearths those roots of the differences of appellation in English and Chinese and points out the implication and application of appellation in intercultural communication and in English teaching and learning. In order to achieve successful intercultural communication and to avoid further pragmatic failures and misunderstanding in the intercultural communication, the thesis suggests that English learners in China should pay more attention to the communicative competence, and in particular, sociolinguistic competence in their studies and English teachers should also attach more importance to this aspect. The study on appellation has a number of implications both in intercultural communication an in the teaching and learning of English as a foreign language.Chapter one is about literature review, giving the current situation of appellation study in China and in western world. Chapter two is theoretical framework and the study of pragmatic functions of appellation, offering the analysis and summary. Chapter three is the contrastive study of pragmatic functions on appellation, involving similarities, differences and causes of pragmatic difference of Chinese and English appellation. Chapter four is the major findings and implications.
