Abstract


Since the reform and opening to the outside world, especially from1990s,Shanghai’s economy has developed rapidly. Consumption is the fundamental drivingforce of economic development; meanwhile, economic development determines thelevel of consumption. With the Shanghai Economic Area’s GDP growth, driving theurban-rural income rose. In this case, the level of consumption is also rising, andpromoting the economic development. There is an interaction between the two,mutually reinforcing relationship. This article tries to analyze the consumer inpromoting sustainable economic growth and the role of economic growth, theimpact on household consumption, and the final proposed to promote the growth ofreal consumption, operational measures and suggestions.At first，based on the consumption function theory and the theory of economicgrowth, this paper studied the residents, consumption and economic growth inShanghai. One of the innovations is the empirical innovation. And the other is thecombination of use VAR model, co integration theory and vector error correctionmodel. Using the Co integration theory research the long-term relationship betweenconsumption of household and economic growth, and reached the conclusion thatthe resident consumption and economic growth have a long-term equilibrium; theconsumer has a positive role in promoting economic growth. Later, through establishthe VAR model, using impulse response analysis and variance decomposition analysisthe short-term fluctuations between the two variables. And obtain the conclusionthat the consumer can quickly bring the city’s GDP growth and have a lasting effect.On this basis, analysis the shortcomings during the process of economic developmentin Shanghai, and put forward the relevant policy recommendations by startingconsumption, improve the consumption rate, which including the following points: topromote the rapid development of the rural economy, increase farmers income anddevelop the rural market; improving the social security system; improving the legalsystem and standardize the administrative system; speeding up the incomedistribution system reform; increase consumer income expectations, higher consumer confidence; to create a good environment for consumption.
