Abstract


Pun as a figure of speech uses a word or phrase to get two meanings: literal meaning and connotation meaning so as to achieve humorous or sarcastic sense. What’s more, as a kind of art in writing and speaking, pun occupies a great place in English and Chinese rhetoric figure, which doesn’t mean that puns can be used in any occasions. There are many similarities between English and Chinese but in many ways they are different, while people always subconsciously consider them as equal. If we can learn about the similarities and differences between English and Chinese puns, we wouldn’t misunderstand each other and achieve a better appreciation. To solve these problems, this thesis aims at analyzing and comparing English and Chinese puns in some typical sentences and dialogues through semantic, pragmatic, cultural perspectives and so on. In addition, we also compare them through partial tone, forms and meanings.Through the comparative study of pun in Chinese and English, the thesis can make language learners have a better and comprehensive understanding of the characteristics and applications of English and Chinese puns, and also help them have a profound understanding of different national historic development, living environment, customs, ways of thinking and aesthetic concepts and furthermore it can produce an effective influence on grasping and learning English and Chinese language to language learners.The paper is divided into five parts.It begins with the introduction and tells the reason why I adopt the contrastive study to discuss rhetorical figures,and why I choose pun as the object to deal with.Then it comes to the second chapter, which is about the review and research of the pun currently. The third chapter is about the classifications of rhetorical figures. It introduces the definitions of rhetorical figures in the two languages, the criteria for the classification and a literature review of the classification. The fourth chapter is devoted to discuss the differences and similarities of pun in both English and Chinese languages. The last part of the thesis is the conclusion that comparative study is necessary for language learning. And through the contrastive study of English and Chinese rhetorical figure-pun, a better understanding of both languages and cultures, and smoother translation would be obtained.Through all the endeavors done in this thesis, people can use puns in English and Chinese languages properly so as to eliminate unnecessary misunderstandings when communicating with others.
