Abstract

Formaldehyde and methanol are very common small organic molecules in daily life, the applied areas of them are different for their different properties. The electro-catalyticoxidation mechanisms of organic molecules have been the research focus of scientists.Platinum is one of the best noble metal in one-component catalyst, but platinum isexpensive, and in the electro-catalytic oxidation process of formaldehyde and methanolthe platinum could be poisoned by the intermediate products, contaminants also could beintroduced into the catalyst in the process of preparation. Thus new catalyst was preparedin this work by electrochemical method which is a green method, and examined theperformance of the prepared catalyst. According to the results, the graphene-platinumelectrode prepared by one step electrochemical reduction had good electric catalyticactivity to formaldehyde and methanol. For the fabrication of modified electrode, graphite oxide was produced first. Themain work of the second chapter in this paper was produced graphite oxide by classicalHummers method. It is simple and safe, the oxidizing reaction was completely and stillsave a lamellar structure. Graphite oxide was hydrophilic because of the increasedhydrophilic groups and the oxygen containing groups. The preparation processes of modified electrodes were described in chapter Three. The graphene modified electrode, the platinum nanoparticles modified electrode and thegraphene-platinum modified electrode were fabricated by one-step electrochemicalreduction. The electrochemical reduction is quick, simple, controllable and green, therewas no reducing agent introduced in the process. In order to further research the prepared electrodes, they were applied informaldehyde and methanol electro-catalytic oxidation in chapter Four. According to theexperiments, graphene-platinum electrode had more active catalytic activity toformaldehyde electro-catalytic oxidation, and formaldehyde oxidation reaction on theelectrode surface was controlled by the diffusion step, so the prepared electrode had agreat application prospects in formaldehyde detection. Meanwhile, the graphene-platinumelectrode also showed good activity to methanol electro-catalytic oxidation, the presence of graphene in the process of oxidation played a certain important role.
