Abstract

The new generation high-energy physics experiments need thehomogeneous hardron calorimeter (HHCAL) with dual readout of Cherenkov andscintillation light. The key part of HHCAL is the detector material with the emissionof Cherenkov and scintillation light. Rare-earth doped oxyfluoride glass is anexcellent luminescent material, with good mechanical strength, thermal and chemicalstability. As a kind of fluoride glass, it is with low phonon energy that itsluminescence intensity would be improved effectively. The PbF2-based heavy metalscintillation glass, with high desity, short UV cut-off and low cost, is a promisingcandidate detector material for HHCAL, which have taken widerspread attentionfrom researchers all over the world recent years. In the thesis, based on the glass matrix composition of PbF2-PbO-SiO2,several rare earth ions doped glasses were prepared. Their physical andluminescent properties were investigated by measuring density, transmittance, UVspectra and X-ray excited luminescence spectra. The main researvh results are listedas following:(1) Ten kinds of matrix glass of PbF2-PbO-SiO2with different compositionratio were designed and prepared by high-temperature melting-quenching method.According to the density, the transimittance and the capability of glass-forming ofthe matrix glasses, the proper matrix glass composition is50PbF2-10PbO-40SiO2.It has high density over6.0g/cm3, refractive index over1.75and UV cut-off of326nm.(2) Under the excitation of X-ray and UV, Tb3+doped PbF2-based glassemitted blue green light resulted from the energy transition of5D37FJ(J=5and4) and5D4→7FJ(J=6,5,4and3) of Tb3+. Its luminescence decay time at545nm excited by UV was about2.60ms. For Eu3+doped PbF2-based glass,it emitted orange red light from5D07FJ(J=0,1,2,3and4) of Eu3+and itsUV luminescence decay time at592nm was about2.80ms. No scintillation light was detected in Dy3+doped PbF2-based glasses.(3) Tb3+/Gd3+and Tb3+/Dy3+co-doped PbF2-based glasses both emittedthe light of Tb3+. Due to the week self absorption of Gd3+in Tb3+/Gd3+co-doped PbF2-based glasses, Gd3+has no sensitization for the luminescenceof Tb3+. While for Tb3+/Dy3+glass, the energy transfer takes place amongTb3+and Dy3+. Accordingly, Dy3+sensitized the luminescence of Tb3+, andthen its luminous intensity was much larger than that of Tb3+doped glass.
