Abstract

Two or more incompatible thermoplastic polymers of which processing temperatures arevery different are blended into in-situ microfibrillar composites in which dispersed materialsbecome microfibrillar. The high processing-temperature materials could form fibers in theprocess of preparing, and the generation of microfibrillar is important to optimizing theperformances of the material.Polypropylene (PP) and polyphenylene sulfide (PPS) are blended, extruded and stretchedvia a melting-extrusion-quenching process. PPS is taken as microfibrillar phase and PP istaken as matrix to prepare high-performanced in-situ microfibrillar composites. In this paper:PP/PPS in-situ microfibrillar composites are prepared via a melting-extrusion-quenchingprocess. Composites are prepared with compatibilizer under the same conditions. Therheology and thermal properties of PP/PPS in-situ microfibrillar composites are investigated. The shape of microfibrillar and crystalline morphology of PP/PPS in-situ microfibrillarcomposites are observed. The dynamic mechanical property, tensile strength, notched impactstrength and hardess of PP/PPS in-situ microfibrillar composites are examined.Research results show that:(1)PP/PPS in-situ microfibrillar composites could be obtained from amelting-extrusion-quenching process.(2)The rheology test shows that the shear stress of PP/PPS in-situ microfibrillarcomposites increases and shear viscosity reduces with the increasing shear rate at the settingtemperature.(3) Well defined PPS microfibrils and spherocrystals are found in the PP/PPScomposites.(4)The result of DSC shows: the melting tempreature of PP changes little after theintroduction of PPS. The crystallization onset temperature of PP increases with the increasingPPS content. The flow temperature and thermal deformation temperature of PP/PPS in-situmicrofibrillar composites are higher than that of pure PP. The flow and thermal deformation temperature of composites increases with the increasing PPS content.(5)DMA result shows that tanδ has the largest value when temperature increases to somedegree. The loss modulus and storage modulus of PP/PPS composites decreases with theincreasing temperature respectively, while the content of PPS has an irregular influence on it.Tensile strength of PP/PPS in-situ microfibrillar composites reduce with the increasingPPS content. Tensile strength of blends with compatibilizer reduce much.Notched impact strength of PP/PPS in-situ microfibrillar composites reduce with theincreasing PPS content. Notched impact strength of blends with compatibilizer increase.(6) The density and hardess of PP/PPS in-situ microfibrillar composites increase with theaddition of PPS.
