Abstract


Verbal irony , as a widely witty language phenomenon , has been favored by the majority of researchers . The irony has an intuitive understanding , but linguists or them from all angles, launched a study . Author to the principles of cooperation and politeness principle as the theoretical framework of the study , whichever irony lines in the U.S. sitcom \contrast , produce characteristics to find out in the framework of the theory of irony , irony hosted language function and listener reaction for ironic utterances , thus further turn to verify that the principle of cooperation to explain the irony arising on the issue of the extent to which it is reasonable and effective 's . In order to ensure the reliability and validity of the study , the authors were carefully chosen from each drama typical irony lines 200 cases , using a combination of qualitative and quantitative analysis , carried out a detailed and comprehensive discussion and analysis .
