Methods of Translating English Long Sentences Seen from E-C Syntactic Differences

Abstract


The subject material of my master thesis depends on The Contemplated Spousewhich is combined all the letters written by Wallace Stevens. The book has taken noteson the collective contents of all the letters. The reason why the author chooses thisbook to be the material is that it not only expresses a strong personal passion, but alsocontains many English long sentences which deepen the difficulty to the translationprogress. This article analyzes the E-C translation methods from the syntacticperspectives on the differences between English and Chinese. Firstly, the authoranalyzes the syntactic differences according to the text material and then summarizesthe syntactic differences—English is hypotaxis while Chinese is parataxis, English is asubject-prominent language but Chinese is a topic-prominent language. Secondly, theauthor combines these syntactic differences to analyze the English long sentences inthe translation practice and does a further analysis of the characteristics of the Englishlong sentences: more phrases, more coordinate components and supplementaryelements. She also gives a detailed explanation of four kinds of commonly usedtranslation methods: translation in original order, translation in reverse, splitting, andcomprehensive translation method. And many examples have been shown that whenthese methods can be used and how these four methods work in the translation progress.For example, when the contents of the long sentences in English and Chinese arebasically the same in narrative level which is described by the continuity of actions orbased on actions that occurs chronological arrangement or that is by a certain logicrelationship, we can use the translation in original order to translate it; when theEnglish long sentences may not arrange themselves in the same order or even in theopposite order to Chinese, we can use translation in reverse order; when a sentencecontains a long attribute, adverbial modifier and parenthesis, we can use splitting totranslate it; when the above three kinds of methods can not suit to translate a longsentence, translators can use comprehensive translation method to do a comprehensiveanalysis of the whole sentence. Lastly, the article also presents out how to use thesefour kinds of translation methods in the progress of translating an English longsentence with a purpose to make our translated text both correct and appropriate.
