Abstract


The end of the 20th century , the development process of moral education in American schools , a noteworthy phenomenon or movement , this is the return of the traditional character education and flourished , called the new character education . Character education in the United States from the period of colonial pioneered the traditional form of moral education , the gradual decline until the 20th century, under the influence of many factors . Half of American society in the 20th century, there have been huge changes in American society for decades thereafter , the extreme individualism of the 1960s thought caused a deep negative impact , and in force in the 1960s and 1970s, a new way of moral education solve these social problems in the United States with little success. The majority of Americans believe that the United States is in decline in the moral and spiritual aspects , advocate and called for schools to implement character education , and to restore the traditional virtues , rebuild the moral consensus . In the 1980s and 1990s , character education is gradually returning to U.S. schools . The return of character education has a very important significance . This article from the point of view of the culture of a new character education in the United States for analysis , because of the culture and education are always closely linked . Formed its own unique cultural patterns in the United States in the course of history , including the three elements of the Bible, religion, republicanism and individualism . Bible, religious and republican emphasis on personal responsibility and obligations , the emphasis on the relationship between the individual and the society ; individualism emphasis on individual freedom and rights , and attention to personal development . The three coexist for a long time and maintain a relatively balanced state . However , since the 20th century, with the individualism dominant , this balance is gradually breaking down , leading to 60 years of extreme individualism , which triggered a series of social problems and moral crisis . Through analysis, the paper argues that the only restore such a relatively balanced state in order to ensure the harmonious development of U.S. personal and social health , character education in the United States to achieve this balance is an important way , it revive the Bible, religious and republican values ??, the control the extreme individualism development to help restore the balance of American culture , and thus regain social integration .
