Abstract


Wang Maolin is an important author in early Qing Dynasty. Being an honest magnanimous and upright official, his personality is upright and outspoken, and his style of writing is clean and artistic. Jiao Xun once appraised him as "the greatest man in literary world"; his praise can obviously show that his assignable influence of the literary world in early Qing Dynasty should not be underestimated. Wang Maolin, Wang Shizhen and other scholars in Yangzhou are all have great experience in traveling, form their unique poetic theory and the literary style. His works that are survived in nowadays include A Hundred Feet Indus Court Poetry Volume sixteen, A Hundred Feet Indus Court Corpus Volume eight, The Richly Painted Zither Archaism Volume three, Posthumous Manuscript of A hundred Feet Indus Court Volume ten and many other literary works. His poetries and articles highlight his ego temperament, represented regional culture in Yangzhou;these works have great cultural connotation and research value. This paper is divided into five parts to study Wang Maolin.In the introduction of this paper,I mainly hackle the achievement of study Wang Maolin in China literary world from Qing Dynasty, and at the same time point out the blankness in study of Wang Maolin. At the present, the research results are mainly concentrated on his family background and writing style, while there is plenty of room for discussing his poetry collection, literary theory and social intercourse.Chapter one investigates the life story and intercourse of Wang Maolin. Wang’s lifetime can be divided into three phases. School life is the first period and the essay argues whether he is a salt merchant. Political life is the second period and the reason why he gave up being a government official is explained. Impeachment is the third period and his mood back home in his older time is analyzed. Wang’s social intercourse is also clarified, for his genuine personality and abundant knowledge helps him win large number of friends. His friendship with his master Wang shizhen, other students and adherents of Yangzhou is discussed.Chapter two analyzes Wang’s poetic collection and different editions. The first part clarifies the different origins of editions of his collected because Maolin’s articles have three volumes, ten volumes and eight volumes. Based on related materials, this papermakes analytic demonstration since it has obscure editions. The second part clarified different editions of his collection of poems, including A hundred Feet Indus Court Poetry Volume sixteen and Posthumous Manuscript of A Hundred Feet Indus Court Volume ten. This paper surveys its writing process and the source of editions.Chapter three demonstrates ancient prose theory and prose creation of Wang Maolin. The first part discusses his ancient prose theory. He holds that the outstanding literary tradition of conveying truth and principle by articles should be carried on and also raises "practical utility" theory. The second part explains the content of Wang Maolin’s prose and his prose can be divided into biography, narration,inscription and critical informal essay. It also elaborates these kinds specifically. The third part discuss the status and influence of Maolin’s articles in Yangzhou literary circle of Qing dynasty.Chapter four studies poetry theory and poetry creation of Wang Maolin. The first part discusses his poetry theory. He maintains that creation should not be imitation of Tang, Fan and Song and learning from all the living creatures is the key point. Poetry’s essence is creative and the representation of poets’mood. The second part explains the content of Wang Maolin’s poetry. His poetry can be classified into provincialism poetry, poems about family emotion, love poems and seclusion poems and explained separately. The third part discuss the status and influence of Wang Maolin’s pomes in Yangzhou literary circle of Qing dynasty.Wang Maolin has made great achievement in poetry and essay. Wang Maolin’s poetry has established its own distinctive characteristics and influenced other poets in Yangzhou districts of later generation.
