Abstract


Objective Recent years, the prevalence of thyroid nodules had a increasing trend.Survey in 10 cities in China from 2006 to 2010 showed that the prevalence rate of thyroid nodules (including single and multiple nodules) had increasde from 10.2% to 18.6%.The same trend was found in a small sample survey in Qingdao Port Group. From 2008 to 2011, the detection rate of thyroid nodule in Qingdao Port Group had increased from 38.83to 52.43%.9612 Qingdao port employees were selected in a large sample study to illustrate the prevalence of thyroid nodules and influencing factors.Methods Qingdao Port Group conducted health checkup for all employees annual.According to the study conditions require, we screened 9612 employees’ health information from all to study the prevalence of thyroid nodules and influencing factors.The survey included gender, age, drinking and smoking habits; history of hypertension, myocardial infarction, stroke and diabetes; height, weight, thyroid palpation and bmi; thyroid ultrasound, urinary iodine.We investigated the prevalence of thyroid nodules and calculated the prevalence through thyroid palpation and thyroid ultrasound, compared the difference in the prevalence of thyroid nodules of the male and female through chi-square test, observed the prevalence’s variation with increaseing age Analysing risk factors for thyroid nodules through logistic regression.Results The prevalence of thyroid nodules was 36.56% in the studied population and increased with age (P<0.01). Single nodules and multiple nodules of the prevalence rates were 18.40% and 18.16%. With the increase in urinary iodine level prevalence of thyroid nodules was more apparent download trend, prevalence of solitary nodules was also on a downward trend, but the trend was not obvious.The prevalence of the male and female groups were 31.28% and 53.22%, the prevalence of the male was lower than female (P <0.01). The results of logistic regression showed that age, smoking, hypertension, diabetes and overweight might be risk factors for thyroid nodules, Compared with male, the female were more susceptible to thyroid nodules.Conclusion The prevalence of thyroid nodules was high in port employees. In order to reduce the thyroid nodules, we promote smoking cessation and weight control, the patients with hypertension and (or) diabetes should be treated actively.
