Abstract

Self-presentation in social networking sites(SNS) refers to that, one controls the content of the information and the way it presented, in order to affect the formation and change of their impression on others. Using questionnaires, interviews, content analysis and experiment, researchers have explored the strategies and influencing factors of self-presentation in SNS, and its impact on individuals. Self-presentation in SNS is influenced by individual factors (demographic differences, personality, motivation, and self-efficacy) and the audience. Meanwhile, Self-presentation in SNS has a positive impact on self-identity, self-esteem and psychological well-being. In this study, we explore self-presentation strategies of social networking sites of college students and investigate its impact on self-esteem.Through the translation of self-presentation strategies Scale, the analysis of its reliability and validity and the measurement in Chinese college students, a Chinese version of self-presentation strategies scale social networking site is formed. Using the scale to filter out different strategies of individual self-presentation, this study investigates the effects of different types of personal homepage viewing and self-presentation strategies for self-esteem. Finally, this study explore the relationship between self-presentation strategies in social networking sites and self-esteem, it hypotheses and verifies the mediated role of positive affects and social supports in it.This study consists of three parts:(1) revised self-presentation strategy network scale;(2) different self-presentation strategies and different types of personal homepage impact on individual self-esteem;(3) internal mechanisms of the relationship between self-presentation and self-esteem, namely, the mediated role positive affects and social support. According to the study, the following conclusions can be drawn:1Forming the social networking site self-presentation strategies Scale (Chinese version). It contains nine projects, two dimensions (positive self-presentation strategies and truly self-presentation strategies). The scale has good reliability and validity.2Social networking sites have dual effects on self-esteem of the individual. Exposure to their own personal homepage in social networking sites has a positive impact on self-esteem of individuals, however, exposure to others’homepage, has a negative impact on self-esteem of individuals; relative to the truly self-presentation strategies, positive self-presentation strategies can improve self-esteem.3Positive self-presentation strategies can enhance self-esteem, primarily through the mediated role of positive affects and the chain mediated role of positive affects and social support; truly self-presentation strategies can enhance self-esteem mainly through the mediated role of social support.
