With the rapid development of IP networks, network bandwidth has graduallyincreased, the reliability of network is increasingly becoming the focus of attention, in thiscase, Bidirectional Forwarding Detection (BFD) get the great concern of Internetorganizations and companies as a reliability technology. It can achieve rapid detection andcarrier-class witching by providing a failure detection mechanism which is medium-independent and protocol-independent. This detection methods can provide high-performance, low bandwidth consumption.Based on the working principle of BFD protocol, this thesis designs a software solutionwhich can comply with the requirements of40gigabit ethernet link detection. The system cansend packet in10ms and detect link failure in30ms. We discuss the background of BFDprotocol and the different points and advantages compared with other link failure detectionmechanisms.Then we descripe research on the BFD protocol home and abroad and thesupport of international network equipment operators to BFD protocol. According to thestandard document, we describe the basic functions as well as the core mechanism of the BFDprotocol. Then we elaborate works and workflow of the protocol.We design the basicframework and function of the BFD module in the architecture of hardware and softwareplatform in the internship company.We divide BFD module into several sub-modules anduse module timing diagram as an auxiliary. At last, we show the details of the design andimplementation of the sub-modules combine with the necessary data structures. We usenetworking test method for testing the module system and verify the efficient detection ofthe BFD module functions with the linkage of OSPF module which is the upper-layerprotocols.So far, the BFD module provide a link detection function for the entire platformsystem. At present, the platform has been successfully put into production.
