Abstract

According to the System Functional Grammar proposed by Halliday, Interpersonal Function can be realized by Mood and Modality. Mood and Modality are considered as the main factors in interpersonal metafunction to realize interpersonal meaning, while transitivity, part of ideational metafunction, can also express interpersonal meaning, so does theme in textual metafunction. When we refer to text analysis, we can not ignore the importance of interpersonal meaning. No matter what kind of text, it always involves the interaction between people. This paper mainly analyzes the changes of the female utterance in different ways and how to realize the interpersonal function through not only the Mood and Modality system presented in Thelma & Louise but also Transitivity and Theme structure. In the meantime, the paper analyzes female consciousness awakening in terms of interpersonal meaning aspect, which can provide a new perspective for the relevant research. At present, applying interpersonal meaning into the discourse analysis has become the main trend in discourse analysis.Interpersonal meaning can express the speaker’s status, attitude, and motive besides passing the information. That is true, when we refer to language analysis, we basically concern more about the social relationship between people in the functional grammar frame, at the same time, and based on the language used by people we can infer his or her status in the society and also his or her consciousness.By interpersonal meaning analysis of the characters in Thelma and Louise., we can clearly conclude that the one who has economic independence and social status has more utterance right and at the same time can control the flow of the information and the turn of the topic. This clearly presents on the language pattern used by people in Thelma and Louise. After making comparison between Thelma’s language patterns before and after consciousness awakening, we can better understand the changing process of female consciousness-awakening.In a word, through the discourse analysis, we can see the change not only in the surface of utterance pattern but also the deep insight of female consciousness. Based on such interpersonal meaning analysis, we can analyze people’s consciousness awakening more scientifically and rationally.
