Abstract


ObjectiveTo evaluate the visual quality of patients with cataract and high myopia after phacoemulsification and multifocal intraocular lens (MIOL) implanation.MethodsThis study was comprised of 60 eyes with high myopia and cataract that had undergone phacoemulsification.40 of the 60 eyes received MIOLs (AcrySof ReSTOR+3D SN6AD1, Alcon) and 20 eyes were implanted with monofocal or sing-focal intraocular lens (SIOL, SA60AT, Alcon). Three months after surgery, distance visual acuity, intermediate visual acuity and near visual acuity and contrast sensitivity (CS) were measured (OPTEC 6500, STEREO OPTICAL). High-order aberrations were measured using an aberrometer (Allegro analyzer, Wave Light).The decentration and tilt of IOLs were quantified using a Scheimpflug videophotography system (Pentacam, Oculus) and image analysis.ResultsThree months after surgery,90% of the patients in the A group had uncorrected near visual acuity better than the patients of B group, CS and glare CS values did not differ significantly between the A and B groups for the low, intermediate and high spatial frequencies tested (P>0.05)But CS and glare CS values of the C group were higher than the other two groups(P<0.05). For a 6 mm aperture diameter, the high-order aberrations showed no statistical differences during the three groups (P>0.05). The extent of IOL decentration and tilt did not show significant differences (P>0.05).ConclusionFor patients with cataract and high myopia, MIOLs can provide a full range of vision with good visual quality, thus greater independence from glasses can be achieved. Eyes receiving MIOLs have relatively normal CS and glare CS values and fewer spherical aberrations compared to those implanted with SOLs.
