Abstract


Doris Lessing is the evergreen in the contemporary English literary world, and her works have been given enthusiastic attention by the scholars and readers at home and abroad because of her wide perspectives and frequent changing styles. In her over half-century writing career, she has completed twenty seven novels, seventeen collections of short stories, seven non-fictions including autobiographies, two dramas and two collections of poetry, etc. The wide range of the genres she used and the topics her works involved are extremely rare in English literature. The award of Nobel Prize in literature in 2007 recognizes her achievements in her writing career and her contributions to human.Doris Lessing who was born in Iran in 1919, moved to South Rhodesia with her parents in 1925 and came back to her motherland in 1949 has complicated life background and experiences. As a person who was given birth by WWI, bred by WWII, has experienced life in the colony and the Cold War, witnessed a variety of survival crises of human in the 20th century, Doris Lessing bears unspeakable traumas. Therefore, she writes traumas with the power of words. The unforgettable traumatic memories and life experiences provide her endless writing power.The approach of combining theory with close reading is used in the thesis. The thesis explores Doris Lessing’s trauma writing from the four aspects of her traumas---family, war, culture and ecology based on the close reading of novels and autobiographies as well as combining the related theories on trauma. It makes a relatively systematic and comprehensive analysis and discussion of Doris Lessing’s trauma writing, explains why and how Doris Lessing writes traumas, and reveals the aims and effects of prophecy and warning by writing traumas in her works.The main body of the thesis is divided into four chapters. Chapter One analyzes Doris Lessing’s traumas from her families in her girlhood and marriage, and studies her trauma writing in The Grass Is Sing, The Memoirs of a Survivor and other two novels. Chapter Two explores her trauma writing of the two great wars and the postwar chaos in the series of ’Children of Violence’ and The Golden Notebook. In Chapter Three, from the perspective of cultural trauma, the thesis discusses her trauma writing caused by the sense of exile on the edge of the mainstream culture and the witness of the postwar negative cultural atmosphere in the series of ’Children of Violence’ and The Golden Notebook. Chapter Four focuses on Doris Lessing’s ecological trauma and trauma writing by analysing what she has seen and heart about the the damage of ecology caused by the white settlers’ overexploitation to the nature in African colonies and the 20th century filled with the environmental problems she has experienced in The Grass Is Sing and Mara and Dann: An Adventure.Doris Lessing’s muse and inspiration come from her real life experiences. Her traumatic memories and experiences make her have deeper thinking in the process of writing. Doris Lessing’s traumas are not only her personal ones but also belong to the age and the society. She expresses her strong sense of anxiety and gets a kind of relief in writing trauma, but more importantly, her trauma writing rings an urgent alarm to human and the world.
