Abstract

For many years, the stereotype affects information processing way of individual and the cognition mechanism of interpersonal behavior is always one of the key stereotype research fields, especially in recent years, because of the introduction of person theory, this field obtained further deep understanding, and enriched the Encoding Flexibility Model. However, the research Plaks et al did mainly aim at the moral stereotype and the study tendency stereotype in west culture, whether the research method and research conclusion could expand to the more typical and more general stereotype fields such as gender domain and race domain and wheteer it adapted to China people were still needed systematic examination. This research planed to inspect the role of person theory to the processing adjustment mechanism of gender stereotype- information attention by four experiments in Chinese college student, in order to confirm the research conclusions of Plaks’s.The present study was consisted of two parts, the first was a preliminary one which aimed to translate and revises the Implicit Person Theory Measure, took it as the picking tool to decide subject, and decide the experimental material, which are masculine/female typical behavior and behavior descriptions have no relation to gender, as well as the masculine/feminine special characteristic and associative behavior description and behavior descriptions have no relation to gender. The second was a formal one which aimed to explore how person theory affects the attention processing adjustment mechanism of the gender stereotype-information by four experiments. It concluded as follows:1. Under high cognitive load, entity theorists allocated more attention to stereotype-consistent information than to inconsistent information, and incremental theorists allocated more attention to stereotype-inconsistent information than to consistent information.2.Under high cognitive load, entity theorists and incremental theorists had different attention allocation way on gender stereotype infoemation were due to the person theory of individual, and not because of the stereotype are different. Both entity theorists and incremental theorists allocated limited attention resources to the information that consist with their person theory. 3. Under low cognitive load, though the way entity theorists and incremental theorists process information based on gender stereotype was not identical, they could allocate attention to all kinds of information fairly as a whole.4. Under low cognitive load, both ntity theorists and incremental theorists allocated more attention resources to infoumation that violated their person theory, and used enough attention resources to process information that violate their person theory actively.
