Abstract

Human communication can be divided into two kinds:verbal and nonverbal. Verbal communication is considered as our most efficient means of communication, which has been given much attention and research for a long time. However, in face-to-face communication, 65% of the information is communicated through nonverbal means (Samovar,1981; Ross, 1974). As to what nonverbal communication is, different scholars have different definitions. Generally speaking, nonverbal communication refers to all the means of communication except verbal language. Or nonverbal communication involves all those nonverbal stimuli in a communication setting that are generated by both the source and his or her use of the environment and that have potential message value for the source or receiver. Stimuli from the receiver that stimulate from itself involve appearance, motion, expression, eye contact, touch, taste, paralanguage; Stimuli from the source involve space, time, silence and so on. (Samovar & Forter&Stefani,2000)The main aim of foreign language teaching is to cultivate students’ intercultural communicative competence (including verbal and nonverbal communication). In recent two decades, foreign language teaching (FLT) in China has been working on cultivating students’ linguistic knowledge which is regarded as main target in daily foreign teaching:vocabulary, grammar, sentence and textual structure are emphasized again and again, but ignores the nonverbal communicative cultivation, which leads to barriers that many students meet later in the actual communication. Nowadays, with the developing intercultural communication, strengthening students’ nonverbal communicative competence cultivation becomes more and more significant. So in FLT, language teachers should combine teaching approaches with nonverbal communication which can make fewer barriers in intercultural communication and develop students’ intercultural communicative competence and improve the quality of teaching in class and cultivate students’ cultural consciousness.This dissertation concentrates on introducing the influence and functions by Kinesics, Chronemics, Proxemics, Paralanguage and Object Language and reveals the current situation of nonverbal communicative application in accordance with the requirements of foreign language teaching at present. In particularly, the writer of this dissertation conducts a questionnaire to testify the status and functions of intercultural nonverbal communication in foreign language teaching and analyzes data of the result. At the end of the dissertation, it provides some ways to improve teachers’ and students’ nonverbal consciousness and their nonverbal skills to achieve greater effect in teaching and learning. The writer do hope that the dissertation will has more or less help to improve the quality of foreign language teaching and cultivate students’ intercultural communicative competence in our country.
