Abstract


In this study, using historical research methods to explore the early 20th century, Snedden and Dewey on vocational education in the United States how to argue, and debate the impact to the reform and development of vocational education in order to gain valuable experience, as vocational education reform and development in China to provide reference. The end of the 19th century, the early 20th century, a major turning point in American society, profoundly changed the face of American social life, industrial revolution and social unrest caused by the questioning of traditional schooling. 1900, with the U.S. urbanization, a large number of students from working-class and immigrant families poured into the school and more than the number of students in the middle-class family, but more children of school age or over-age youth in obtaining a proper education or a vocational skills to out of school before. U.S. school education can not completely get rid of the tradition of European schools, although its mode is different from the European model, but the goal is still the main focus to prepare students for further education, secondary schools should be made to prepare students to participate in social life, and the other kinds of functions are weakened, which was difficult to adapt to American society, certain cultural knowledge and skilled labor demand (1). Progressive educators have called for reform of the traditional education, called for the establishment of a democratic education system, the curriculum and the student's background, needs, abilities and goals fit the focus of the reform is focused on the reform of the education structure, vigorously develop vocational education . However, for reform, there is considerable controversy Thus, in 1900-1917 years, the United States launched a big debate on vocational and technical education, to discuss how the vocational and technical education, in order to adapt to the needs of the age of technology and other issues, \In this controversy, the most representative of the educator John Dewey (John Dewey) and David Snedden (David Snedden). They are deeply dissatisfied with the status of American education, that the low status of vocational education in the formal education system, the traditional school system has been unable to meet the industrial age, the demand of the U.S. economy on the quantity and quality of labor. They agreed that American education has become feeble, together called for reform of school education in the United States, with the production of life is more closely linked to better stimulate students' intellectual development. They argue that traditional education, especially secondary school level courses urgent need for reform, to enrich into vocational education and get updates, in order to better adapt to the reality of social production and life. However, on the development of vocational education in how they produce the profound differences, divided into two factions distinct insights. Snedden efficiency target, its social efficiency of the theoretical basis of the concept of vocational education, advocate of vocational education and liberal education phase separation, the establishment of the general education parallel independent system of vocational education, the implementation of specialized vocational training, oppose comprehensive education and comprehensive school, Critique of vague educational purposes \Dewey starting from the point of view of the social democratic opposition \career just as a means of livelihood for economic purposes, against premature positioning for the students, the blind pursuit of social efficiency, strongly critical of specialized vocational training and the establishment of the independent practice of the vocational education system that so harmful to the social democratic , will direct education towards a more narrow position.
