Abstract


After a history of morn than a century, American doctoral education gradually formed its own unique feature instead of originally imitating the German model. In the 21st century, American politics, economy, culture and science and technology come into a new period of fast development. It has gradually become a national concern that the doctoral education cannot meet the need of the modern society. "Re-envisioning the Ph.D. Project" was initiated by the University of Washington under such circumstances. The project successfully launched a national examination of doctoral education for the 21st century. Over 150 educators and leaders in nine public and private sectors which involve in doctoral education are invited to investigate the current US doctoral education and have submitted their survey reports.This dissertation systematically analyses the background of the project based on the review of the history and present condition of the US doctoral education; recommends the objects, goals, procedure and content of the project; summarizes the main products of the project; analyzed the trend of US doctoral education; and additionally puts forward some suggestions for China in accordance with the main problems of the doctoral education in China.
