Abstract


In recent years,the industrial structure upgrading topic has always been the hot spot that needs to be solved in theory horizon and reality. In the past, research done on it was from the view angle that government promotes the industrial structure upgrading and few researches were concerned with enterprise from microscopic view. However whether industrial structure upgrading can be completed finally or not depends on the available enterprise innovation and new enterprise development orientation. Therefore researches on industrial structure upgrading can not be detached from enterprises which are research basis in reality. In theory, the aim of any economic policy made by enterprise is to obtain the maximum yield at minimum costs. That is to achieve maximizing profit margin. In view of this, there is inevitably a relationship between the profit margin that enterprises are after and industrial structure upgrading contributed by enterprise behavior.According to related theory of the industrial structure upgrading, this paper firstly analyzed how profit margin induced industrial structure upgrading in a full market economy from two aspects. One of the two aspects is innovation inducted by profit margin. The other is the allocation of resources induced by profit margin. With profit margin data of listed companies in China from 1999 to 2008 as the study sample, return on equity was served as indicator for performance appraisal for industry profit margin. Main operating margins which are another measure index for enterprise earning ability were served as comparison referent. The analysis was from different angles including three industry structures、production factors intensivism and labor objects working depth through descriptive statistics and divergence test method. The relationship between profit margin and industrial structure upgrading was explored during different periods. On these bases, with quantitative analysis method, this paper concerned about the specific industry factors effect on profit margins and other factors were eliminated. This paper investigated the profit margins effect on the upgrading of industrial structure in Chinese economic institutional change background with an empirical test. Research results indicate that from three different angles of industrial structure upgrading, the role of profit margin in industrial structure upgrading has nothing in common with each other. They appeared as that from three industries angle, the role of profit margin in industry structure upgrading was not significant; From production factors intensivism angle, the trend was that profit margin induced industry structure upgrading between two industries classified by production factors, however as time went on, the high profit margin advantage of skill-intensive industry has abated; From labor objects working depth angle, as time went on, the guiding role of the profit margin of the industries classified by labor objects working depth was against industry structure upgrading direction. Hence, it shows that profit margin induction effect on Chinese industry structure upgrading is basically unstuck. Finally, according to the empirical results, this paper highlighted the reasons why profit margins did not induce the upgrading of industrial structure in China. They can be nonmarketization of Chinese Factor Market, the government administrative monopoly and absence of enterprise innovation technology to maintain high profit.
