Abstract

Dual-frequency laser with tunable and large frequency-difference has been used extensively in many fields such as optical interferometry and optical sensing, etc. it plays an especially important role in absolute-distance interferometry. Because this measurement approach measures the distance rather than the displacement, it doesn’t need precise guide rail. When a dual-frequency laser is used as the light source of the absolute-distance interferometric system, it requires that the frequency-difference be tuned and as large as possible, namely, the synthetic wavelength be changed and as small as possible so as to facilitate the primary measurement of distance and to improve the measurement accuracy. Therefore the investigation of the dual-frequency laser with tunable and large frequency-difference is of great significance. In this thesis, a diode-pumped dual-frequency laser technique is analyzed theoretically and investigated experimentally, and a novel scheme of dual-frequency Nd:YAG laser with tunable and large frequency-difference is designed and demonstrated experimentally. The main contents of this thesis are included as follows.Firstly, the make up of diode-pumped solid-state laser (DPSSL) has been introduced, and the theory of DPSSL has also been analyzed. An experimental system of DPSSL has been established and its output characteristics have been investigated.Secondly, the principle of single longitudinal mode selection by use of a birefringent filter has been analyzed. On the basis of this, a new birefringent filter consisting of both a PBS and a half-wave plate has been used to select single longitudinal mode. An experimental system of 1064-nm single-frequency Nd:YAG laser has been designed and established, and the tuning characteristics of output power and laser mode spectrum have been analyzed theoretically and studied experimentally.Thirdly, a dual-frequency Nd:YAG laser using the birefringent filter of PBS-λ/2 as mode selector has been designed, the p-component and s-component can be simultaneously oscillated in single longitudinal mode in the two standing-wave cavities, respectively. Each cavity output a beam of 1064-nm single-frequency laser, and another piece of PBS was used to recombine the two beams of 1064-nm single-frequency laser so that a beam of orthogonally and linearly polarized dual-frequency laser output was obtained. Another method of coaxially propergating dual-frequency laser output was also proposed that the orthogonally and linearly polarized dual-frequency laser beam was able to escape from one surface of the intra-cavity PBS due to its film-coating imperfection for both p-component and s-component. Both methods described above have been experimentally proved feasible.Lastly, the tuning characteristics of output power and longitudinal mode characteristics have been analyzed theoretically and investigated experimentally when the laser oscillated in single and both resonant cavities, respectively. The tuning characteristics of frequency-difference of the dual-frequency laser have been studied experimentally, and the investigation results have indicated that the frequency-difference was tunable by changing both cavity lengths, and a maximum frequency-difference has been observed experimentally up to 113.4GHz.
