Abstract


Translation is a kind of link or bridge for people with different languages to communicate with each other; it is a process of carrying meanings between the original language (or source language) and the target language. With the development of the science and technology and the globalization, the scientific and technological translation has begun to play a more and more important role in every aspect of the society. But during this translation process, some problems, misunderstandings, even errors occur. This is mainly because the process of translating concerns with not only the exchange of different language forms but also the exchange of different cultures. The differences in language expressions result from the different patterns of thought which embody the cultural characteristics. This thesis, making a contrastive study between differences of the modes of thinking of Chinese and English people with the purpose of revealing that Chinese and English people are largely different in their mentality which is embodied in their linguistic expressions respectively, choosing error analysis as its instrument, aims to make an attempt to analyze the syntactic errors appeared in E-C scientific and technological translation, and tries to provide some guidelines for the future translation practice and teaching. This thesis consists of seven chapters.At the beginning, it is a brief introduction to the background, significance, methodology and the framework of this study.The second chapter is a literature review of the researches about the relationships between language and thinking, between thinking and translation, and researches about C-E sci-tech translation.The third chapter introduces the theoretical frameworks of this study, namely, Sapir-Whorf’s Hypothesis and Error Analysis.The fourth chapter just defines some key terms in this thesis to make the study more concrete.The fifth chapter is a summary of the differences of the thinking modes of Chinese and English people and their different reflections on these two languages. Through comparison and contrast, it can be seen that the Chinese thinking mode is fuzzy, concrete, synthetic, subject-centered and curvilinear while the English thinking mode is accurate, abstract, analytic, object-centered and linear. Because of their different reflections on the two languages, the negative influence of the thinking modes on translation is obvious.The sixth chapter is the focus of this thesis. This chapter makes full use of the methods of error analysis to analyze the syntactic errors appeared in the C-E scientific and technological translation from the perspective of the differences of the modes of thinking of Chinese and English people. Different thinking modes bring about different syntactic errors in translation. This thesis just classifies these errors into five types according to the five differences mentioned in the fifth chapter: misselection of articles, misselection of abstract and concrete devices, misselection of paratactic and hypotactic devices, misselection of subjective and objective devices, and the wrong place of the sentence focus. This analysis is to provide theoretical guidelines for translation practice and teaching.Finally, conclusions are arrived at. Through the analysis, it is clear that the major features of Chinese and English modes of thinking and languages summarized in the thesis are only those frequently expressed in daily communication. And some methods to avoid these error are suggested, namely, transformation of the thinking modes in translation and mastery of language skills. Also the limitations of this thesis are pointed out, namely, the limitations about the instrument EA, the summary of the differences of the modes of thinking of Chinese and English, the classification and analysis of the syntactic errors in C-E scientific and technological translation, and the not typical example of E-C sci-tech translation. These limitations provide guidelines for future and further research.
