Domestication Can Make Some Differences: A Case Study of Translated Titles of Foreign Films Imported into Hong Kong, Taiwan & Chinese Mainland

Abstract


This thesis focuses on the translating strategies of selected titles of foreign films imported into Hong Kong, Taiwan and Chinese mainland from the mid-1980s to the first quarter of 2009. The whole text is primarily based on Lawrence Venuti’s theory of“domestication”and, to a certain extent,“foreignization”. Venuti asserts, according to Friedrich Schleiermacher’s perspective on the Anglo-American publishing industry, that“foreignization translation”should be preferred to take the place of“domestication translation”, for the former can be a strategy to guarantee differences and bring foreign elements to the target audience who thus will have more chances to be exposed to foreign cultures other than their own, and thus a heterogeneous society will be formed and maintained. However, if we put this kind of theory upon Asia, especially Hong Kong, Taiwan and Chinese mainland which situated in the periphery of global culture as opposed to the Anglo-American one, it will probably unfeasible since it has not touched upon the practical situations in these three communities.It our common sense that most translated titles of the imported films into HK are adapted or, on the whole, domesticated, while the Taiwan practice is somewhat of a less extent, and translators in Chinese mainland seem to be the most conservative. Film titles, unlike other types of texts, are normally translated or adapted by the local film distributor rather than academic translators. Closely connected to box office sales, or the so-called revenue, the nature of films will undoubtedly require that a translating method of domestication be adopted. In addition, considerations are also given to an identity confirmation, a reflection of local culture and political systems.
