Abstract

Image compression techniques are very important for the storage and transmission of the huge data in the modern image processing. Nowadays, the traditional still image compression techniques, e.g., the well-known JPEG standard, could not meet the rapidly increased demand for the high quality low bit-rate images in various emerging applications. The latest still image compression standard JPEG2000 adopts Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT) and Embedded Block Coding with Optimized Truncation (EBCOT), which achieves much better coding efficiency and image quality than the traditional methods. With the excellent performance and prominent features, JPEG2000 will no doubt become the main-stream in the image compression field in the future.Bit Plane Encoder takes up more than 70 percent calculation and encoding time of the JPEG2000 Image Compression, which is very important to JPEG2000 image compression for its excluding unnecessary information of the image. All of above make Bit-plane Encoder’s VLSI realization more important, the paper designed is a serial scanning Bit-plane Encoder using“the Skipping Scanning Mode”in single scanning pass. The Skipping Scanning Mode is mostly applied in the Magnitude refinement pass and Cleanup pass, most empty states in the two passes can be skipped, so that scanning time is deduced significantly. Finally, the design was verified in FPGA development environment, Compared to the traditional scanning mode, the Skipping Scanning Mode can cut down the total scanning time to about 44 percent of its original time, and the hardware consumption only increase about 6.6%.The design achieved the goal of decreasing encoding time.
