Abstract

Objective To study the expression of interleukin-4 (IL-4) and interleukin-12(IL-12) proteins in cervical carcinoma and analyze their relationship with clinicopathologic features and allergic reaction to paclitaxel. Methods Using immunohistochemical technique, we examined the expression of IL-4 and IL-12 in paraffin-embedded tissues from 72 cervical cancer (including 16 patients allergic to paclitaxel chemotherapy as the first chemotherapy after the operation and 18 patients without allergic) and 20 cases of nomal cervical epithelium.Result 1.The positive expression rates of IL-4 in the normal cervical tissues and cervical cancer were 20% and 63.9% respectively. The difference was significant(P<0.01). The positive expression rates of IL-12 were 55% and 48.6% respectively. There was no significant difference(P>0.05).2.The expression of IL-4 in cervical cancer were significantly correlated with FIGO staging, lymph node metastasis (P<0.05).In different tissue Category groups% differentiation groups, no significant difference was found.3. The expression of IL-12 in cervical cancer were significantly correlated with differentiation, lymph node metastasis (P<0.05).There was no significant difference between different tissue Category groups and FIGO staging.4. IL-4 expression showed significant negative association with IL-12 expression in both all the cervical cancers and the group of cervical cancer with paclitaxel after the operation(t(P<0.05).5. The positive expression rates of IL-4 in the group of cervical cancer with allergic reaction to paclitaxel after the operation and the group without allergic reaction were 81.3% and44.4% respectively. The difference between the groups was significant(P<0.05). The positive expression rates of IL-12 in two groups were 43.8% and 55.6% respectively. There was no significant difference(P>0.05).Conclusion 1. The high expression of IL-4 and the decrease of IL-12 may be involved in immune escape, they are related to the occurrence and development of cervical cancer. 2. Allergic reaction to paclitaxel might be associated with the imbalance of IL-4 and IL-12 regulation;IL-4 might be an index to indicate allergic reaction to paclitaxel.
