Abstract


Cynical realism is an artistic phenomenon and an artistic inclination which first appeared in the 1990’s and has last until now, expressing people’s current spiritual condition by the style of ridicule, rascal and vacuity. In this thesis, through the study on the background of cynical realism’s appearance, cynical realism’s artistic characteristic and its mode of discourse, the author tries to summarize the law of creation of this school and translate its attitude and expectation to the society, which may help construct the theoretical system of art.Fang Lijun is one of the most important representative artists of cynical realism. He is sagaciously conscious of problems, is well educated with artistic theories, with a great quantity of works and is active in participating in contemporary artistic activities. Selected Fang Lijun’s creation as case to study, the author wishes to obtain certain revelatory information about cynical realism by concentrating on the key figure and his works.
