Abstract


The process of China’s participation in the international system starts from China’s adoption of the reform and opening-up policy. Much attention has been paid to issues such as the historical evolution of China’s participation in the international system, how the rising China should get along with the existing system, etc. However, there still lacks abundant analysis and explanation of the process and driving forces of China’s involvement in the international financial system. The international financial system is an important part of the international system. Studying the process and driving forces of China’s participation in the system is not only helpful to analyze all the aspects regarding this topic, but also helpful to further understand the development of interaction between China and the international system.Since its foundation, China’s role in the international financial system has evolved from an outsider, to an ordinary participant, further on to an active participant and contributor, due to the changes of China’s own identity and of the international order. The impetus that pushes China to participate in the international financial system comes from two levels:the domestic level and the international level. On the domestic level, the driving forces are:the need for foreign capital and technology to facilitate the reform and opening up process, sovereignty consideration of expelling Taiwan’s illegal status in the international financial system, and the great social and economic benefit of participation in the system. On the international level, the driving forces include considerations such as playing the role as a major power, shaping international image, providing regional public goods and promoting regional cooperation. Currently, China has been actively participating in the reform and development of the international financial system. It has a bright future to be even more involved in the system, and to make greater contribution to the stability and development of the international financial system.Conclusions as follows are reached through analysis. Firstly, the process of China’s participation in the international financial system is in accordance with its involvement in the international system. Secondly, pursuing national interest is the main force that drives China to participate in the international financial system. Finally, China’s capability of shaping the international financial system remains to be improved.
