Abstract


English writing has been considered language teaching liking , speaking, reading , writing and translation of one of the most difficult to master five basic skills . In English writing , how to write informative , well-structured , the language fluent good article is a huge challenge for the majority of English learners . Many English learners basically mastered basic English writing skills , able to use the vocabulary and grammar to complete the general task of writing , the wording correct syntax errors few basic integrity of the content . However, the Cohesion and Coherence in English Writing exposed is relatively common . How to help students overcome this problem is an important task for the majority of English teachers . Halliday and Hasan 's cohesion theory as the theoretical basis , analyzes the cohesion and coherence of college students in English composition errors . 100 essays written by students to a minor degree in English at Huazhong University of Science and Technology for the corpus , the use of quantitative research methods , cohesive devices in the statistics of the students' writing , and the convergence of the number of errors , using qualitative methods that the cause of the error designed to strengthen the sense of cohesion and coherence of the teachers and students be helpful for English teaching . The results of this study show that the convergence and continuity errors in the Students' writing is relatively common : Cohesive devices do not misuse or abuse before and after the sentence semantics is not coherent sentence paragraph can not keep semantic consistency and theme of the essay topic understand mistakes . These problems show the lack of writing ability of Chinese students . These deficiencies requires teachers Attention should also be given in the usual English writing teaching , in addition to the introduction of traditional grammar taught cohesion and coherence of knowledge , strengthen the Cohesion and coherence training reached sentences , paragraphs , and chapter level convergence and coherent. Only in this way , it may produce high-quality writing .
