Abstract


As the driving force of economic development, energy plays a vital role in economic development. Since Guangdong’s reformation and opening up, the rapid economic growth has attracted worldwide attention, along with the rapid growth of energy consumption. The shortage of energy has long been a bottleneck problem. Under this background, finding out the main factors which effect the energy efficiency is helpful for policy-making about energy saving and emission reduction.In this dissertation, based on econometric techniques, regional difference analytical method and structure decomposition analysis, the relationships between energy consumption and economic growth as well as the main factors of energy efficiency are system studied. The main conclusions are as follows:Firstly, cointegration test and vector error correct model(VECM) were applied to research the relationships between energy consumption and economic growth in Guangdong. The estimation results show that energy consumption and economic growth are co-integrated and there is Granger causality runs unidirectional from economic growth to energy consumption. The regression results indicate that economic growth and labour input are the determinal factors which result in the swift growth of energy consumption.Secondly, regional analytical tools such as Lorenz Curve are used to study the energy consumption allocation. The results state clearly that cities in Pearl River Delta and northern Guangdong consumed most of the energy. Energy consumption allocation was unbalanced among 21 cities of Guangdong province, although the extent of unequlity is within the reasonable range.Thirdly, based on the discending order of energy intensity we got the ten most high energy-consuming industries. Then location quotient(LQ) was applied to research the regional concentration of the ten most high energy-consuming industries. The results shows that the more that the hith energy-consuming industries take up in regional industrial added value, the higher the regional energy intensity.Fourthly and lastly, structural decomposition model about energy intensity was established to dicover how energy intensity changes in Guangdong. We come to the conclution that the improving of energy efficiency was the determinant factor which led to the decrease of Guangdong energy intensity. However, the change of industrial structure plays a limited role to decrease the energy intensity in Guangdong during the same period.
