With the rapid increasing of storage capacity and the supporting for multiple applications in smart cards, the in-card data management is more and more complex. A DBMS is urgently needed to manage these data by smart cards as the specificity of some applications, particularly the application of personal privacy. The Smartcard DBMS is different from traditional DBMS, and also from the embedded DBMS, due to the constraints of itself. Hence, it is needed to design a specific DBMS for the smart cards. Smartcard DBMS is one of the important basic technologies to support personal data management.At first, via analyzing the similarities and differences among the smart card DB, embedded DB and main memory DB, the available existing technology of the DBMS is considered. The shortcomings and quotable techniques of the PicoDBMS are pointed out via analyzing the current status of the smart card DB. Secondly, the smart card file system with a database file is introduced. A system model of the Smartcard DBMS is given more compact, meeting the basic needs of DBMS, removing the unnecessary functions, and can be implemented easily in the smart card. Thirdly, a purpose-based access control model is given on the basis of binding the access purpose to private data. The consistency check, the identification of privacy properties and the query modification for a query submitted by user execute via accessing the related data in the system table. Due to the purpose-based access control model, the security and availability of privacy data is ensured at the same time. And then, a hybrid storage model for smart card DBMS based on the storage of EEPROM and FLASH is given. The data, which needs low granularity of R/W operations or frequent operation, is stored in the EEPROM, and the rest of data is stored in FLASH, by which the performance of the storage for table, domain and index can be promoted. Finally, the algorithm of appending records in the table with no sequence requirement is provided for the Smartcard DBMS model placed on the TCG256 chip. The performance of the model is proved effective via analyzing the efficiency of the total time consumption with a test case.
