In recent years, there has been growing attention to indoor renovation, leading to increasing indoor air pollution from a variety of renovation materials. Deteriorating indoor air quality has attracted wide attention from urban residents and scholars. Emission from building materials, furniture, etc, Total Volatile Organic Compounds (TVOC), benzene, and formaldehyde are widely used as key indicators of indoor air quality. Due to its potential health effects, they are listed as pollutant for priority control actions to improve the indoor air quality by World Health Organization (WHO), U.S. National Academy of Sciences, National Research Council (NAS/NRC) and other agencies.In this thesis, the review of VOCs, benzene, and formaldehyde pollutions in families was summarized. It’s focus on the description of concentration, and its impact factors of TVOC, benzene, and formaldehyde.2302 indoor air samples in Hangzhou city were collected to analyze the concentrations of TVOC and its relationship with the potential influencing factors. All samples were collected from the rooms (sleeping, sitting, and study rooms) renovated within one year from 2007 to 2009. Concentration level of TVOC, benzene, and formaldehyde was universally higher than the standard level in many houses. Some rooms were heavily polluted by these pollutents. A relationship model between contamination concentrations and the five (temperature, humidity, source and the two times above mentioned) were established to quantify their impact on the concentration. The emission source is the most important impact factor to TVOC concentrations, which makes up 43.8% of that. Temperture and humidity make up more than 50% of all the impact to the formaldehyde pollutions. At last, I studied the combined action of temperature and humidity on the concentration of formaldehyde. Synergistic action of temperature and humidity was found in the process of formaldehyde emission from the sourse. And a new conception ’Temperature-humidity effect of indoor formaldehyde pollution’ was raised.Results of this study are believed to enrich the databases of indoor air pollution monitoring, help understand TVOC and formaldehyde emission characteristic. The scientific basis and theoretical support for controlling indoor air pollutions and improving indoor air quality could be provided by our results, too. Last but not least, it could help residents to determine a reasonable time to move in a newly renovated room.
