Abstract

The traditional fish-shaped patterns (Yu Wen) are full of Chinese wisdom for thousands of years, whose special shapes reflect the unique cultural connotation of China and become an important traditional Chinese culture element. This thesis studies the Yu Wen in the traditional Chinese iconic design, explores its unique functional value and styling techniques and discusses the heritage in modern design. The thesis borrows the image analysis method to study the changing and development of the Yu Wen, analyzes its symbolic meanings and connotations from the ethnic, cultural, artistic, and political perspectives and discusses its application value and method. In the past, we pay more attention to the history of evolution and identification of patterns. Most of the books and articles are also only a general description. We seldom combine the symbolic meaning with the modern design. So in our study of this branch, there is lack of an extremely important point of view, that is, symbolic allegorical description.The thesis first introduces the research background, purpose, meaning, research methods, gives the definition and scope of the traditional decorative patterns and clarifies the importance of research in this topic. Then the thesis has systematically reviewed the evolution of the traditional decorative patterns---Yu Wen and interpreted its origins, development and application. Next, based on the collation of literature and pictures, the thesis tries to tease out the developmental characteristics of the traditional Yu Wen and the applied methods. Finally, the thesis has given a more detailed description of the cultural significance and philosophy with Chinese characteristics of Yu Wen.On this basis, the thesis presents a detailed analysis of the cultural meaning and aesthetic value contained in the traditional Yu Wen, breaks through the results of previous studies, and digs out, in-depth, the inherent cultural implications of the Yu Wen. Based on the previous study, from the humanistic, commercial, aesthetic aspects, the thesis analyzes the value of the traditional Yu Wen patterns and six applications in modern design: conception, modeling, composition, materials, process and color, with focus on its applications in modern design from“form”,“meaning”,“charm”aspects. With a large number of design examples, the thesis focuses on how to apply the traditional Yu Wen in modern design methods. It is worth mentioning that the thesis has broken through the worship and respect for the traditional patterns and presented a creative interpretation of the traditional Yu Wen to change and reconstruct Yu Wen patterns through the various visual elements of "meaning into form", "abstract and simplified", "division reconstruction", and "image modeling", to constitute a variety of creative graphics, and to achieve the modern heritage of the traditional culture.
