Abstract


In the process of a social class structure’s formation, the model of social mobility and mechanism of social mobility play an important role. This feature is particular evident in the Transitional China. In the planned economy period, Political Domination-oriented Model of Social Mobility led to social mobility channels blocked. At that time, the members of the society is divided into workers,farmers and cadres, which are three basic classes in the society. Social mobility is very little among the three classes. After the reform and opening up, the Modern Model of Social Mobility is becoming more and more dominant, and social classes have taken place the trend of diversification in a wide range.There are lots of performances in the development and change of society, 701 Diamond Mine is a microcosm of this change. In the planned economy period, 701 Mine is under the protection of the Planned Economic System, which brings the great superiority to the development of 701 Mine and the treatment of workers, and they are in the middle and upper classes of society at that particular time. However, with the changes of society, and under the social background of the market transformation, their situation has changed and their superior position will not come back forever. The development of the Mine is faced with dilemma, the workers within the Mine, some work outside their home, some choose to do business, and more choose to remain in the downward Mine. Now workers are already in the lower strata of society.From the changing of the 701 Mine and the mobiling of workers, we can find not only the economic system’s transformation track which from a planned economy system to a market economy system in our county, but also the changing of social mobility patterns and mechanisms. Currently, the model of social mobility in our country is not only different from Political Domination-oriented Model of Social Mobility, but also different from the Modern Model of Social Mobility. It is in a transitional state, which has shown the dual nature of the characteristics of a social mobility model. The changes of social mobility pattern and mechanism also caused changes in the structure of China’s social strata.
