Abstract


“Paralanguage”, as an essential part of human communication, is a very important and common way of verbal communication, and assists the transmission of verbal information. This thesis takes the dialogues of the literature works as the corpus, and analyzed the relationship between paralanguage and context, verbal communication and nonverbal communication forms, explaining the“paralanguage”phenomenon of dialogues in specific context, explored the pragamatic functio of paralanguage.The thesis classifies paralanguage into three categories, they are“voice righteousness function with phenomenon”with ponetic carrier and ideographic function, language righteousness function of the phenomenon”without phonetic carrier but ideographic function,“‘watch list ’affection phenomenon”with without phonetic carrier but ideographic function, includeing eight paralanguage means: tone, volume, speed, pause, silence, laugh, cry and sigh.It aims at analyzing the pragmatic performance of paralanguage, and the value of paralanguage in verbal communication.This paper adopts the qualitative analysis and contrast method. The latter one is used in analyzing the function of paralanguage, contrasting the two situations that whether paralanguage is used in verbal communication. The analysis of paralanguage phenomenon in thesis may further prove that paralanguage is an important auxiliary way of communication, and it can provide additional meaning, replace the language in specific context, emphasize or negate the meaning in communication.
