Abstract


Banks play an important role in the development of national economy, by providing funds for national economic construction, financial services for citizens, and by supporting enterprise development. City Commercial Bank, as an emerging power, has shown good momentum of development to promote local economic development. Being a backup of big banks and small financial institutions, city commercial banks help large numbers of small businesses and innovative enterprises, with their financial strength, to fly higher and farther; it may also have a close relationship with local government, for more effective support of local economic development.At present, some city commercial banks have achieved a cross-regional development; some of them have been successfully listed; many of them have realized scale-fold rapid business development. Now city commercial banks are undergoing great changes. After the 2008 global financial crisis, banks are faced with increasing operation risk. Regulators should focus on enhancing their asset quality, strengthen their ability to resist risks, and supervision on their operation and all the risks. Possible solutions are to promote effective integration between city commercial banks for a more efficient allocation of resources; to promote more inter-regional development of city commercial banks; to accelerate the listing of quality city commercial banks. But government regulation alone can not assure the development of city commercial banks. The most important thing is to start from the city commercial bank itself. This requires us to determine the right strategic objectives, to develop practical strategic measures, to pursue the target and to make continuous evaluation and adjustment. The only choice for city commercial banks is content-based development. We need to explore from all aspects the external environment, the internal resources and management, so as to find the internal pattern, and the way to success.Many professionals in this field have studied the strategic management of city commercial banks. But the changes in the external environment and the internal resources force us to learn from practices, and to polish the theories. This thesis, based on the practice of CD bank strategic management and the over-10-year experience of the author in CD bank, studies the nature and characteristics of city commercial banks, uses the strategic management theory, strategic analysis, and advanced management concepts. After analyzing the advantages and disadvantages of CD bank development, the thesis locates the strategic positioning, finds the right strategic objectives, determines the overall development strategy and functional strategies, and finds the right path to realize all the targets. Meanwhile it provides evaluation and feedback of the process, and sums up the experience and lessons of strategic management, corrects errors, ensures that each stage of the task is completed, and finally realizes the ultimate strategic objectives. Finally the thesis provides, based on the case study of CD bank, some suggestions for improving the strategic management of city commercial banks.The highlights of this thesis lie in the case study of CD bank, and an in-depth, detailed analysis of its strategic management. The main contribution of this thesis is that it puts forward constructive suggestions which will promote the strategic management of CD bank, and will help city commercial banks onto the right path.
