Abstract


This thesis aims to probe into vocational college students’acquisition of English passives. An error analysis of students’using English passives from a language transfer perspective is carried out. After error data collection, the author classifies all the errors into two general types, discusses the causes of the errors and especially studies the negative language transfer factor as the significant cause of the errors. At the end of this thesis, implications for both vocational college English teachers and learners are given.English passives, as grammatical terms, are not only important but also difficult in English learning. Chinese and English belong to two totally different language systems. English verbs have different forms in different voices and tenses, while the forms of Chinese verbs actually have no change in different voices and tenses. During acquiring English passives, Chinese students will make errors for differences between the two kinds of languages.Based on important theories in second language acquisition which are language transfer, error analysis, interlanguage, contrastive analysis and markedness, this thesis takes the method of empirical study. The study is mainly conducted in Shandong Economic Management Personnel College where the author teaches. The college is a three-year vocational college, which is comparatively different from those four-year universities. The overall participants of the study come from two classes (100 students total) majoring in Logistics Management. Fifty students are freshmen and the other fifty students are sophomores.The students’daily writing assignments are collected and a Chinese-to-English translation test is carried out for further study. The results of the translation test are also collected. As for the errors made in the above-mentioned tasks, the author classifies them into two general types and analyses the causes of the errors by a contrastive study between Chinese and English. The errors are analyzed basically from the negative language transfer perspective. Culture differences, thought pattern differences and deficient grammar knowledge are three main intrinsic causes of the negative language transfer.This thesis consists of four chapters, together with introduction and conclusion. To begin with, the introduction states the research background and the significance of the present study, and outlines the general structure of the thesis.Chapter one describes previous studies on English passives at home and abroad and tries to make it clear that which part of the studies in this field is more popular.Chapter two introduces the theories about language transfer, error analysis, interlanguage, contrastive analysis and markedness respectively and lays a good theoretical foundation for the future discussions. A contrastive analysis of English and Chinese passives is also carried out, which is necessary for the next chapter.Chapter three, the major part of the thesis, is an experiment carried out to analyze the errors of students’using English passives. The results of the students’errors by using English passives are collected and analyzed. The causes of those errors, especially the negative language transfer factor, are discussed in this chapter.Chapter four offers vocational college English teachers and learners some practical suggestions on English passives’teaching and learning.In the conclusion part, tentative conclusion is made. Of course, some limitations are also pointed out and suggestions for further research are given.
