Abstract


Empathy strategy has been widely discussed, studied and used since it was first introduced into linguistics by the Japanese linguist Kuno from the fields of aesthetics and psychology. Empathy strategy has been used in various kinds of communication.Intercultural communication is communication between people from different cultures and it is more difficult than inner-cultural communication due to cultural differences. Therefore, it is important for the communicators to communicate emotionally by sharing each other’s feelings in order to achieve communication goals. For this purpose, empathy strategy is applied to intercultural communication.The Adaptation Theory is created by Verschueren and it was elaborated in Understanding Pragmatics (1999). This theory has been widely used to explain various kinds of pragmatic problems from different perspectives. In this research, the adaptation between context and linguistic structure in the Adaptation Theory is mainly applied to elaborate the realization of empathy strategy in intercultural communication.Empathy strategy in intercultural communication in this research can be defined as follows: the addressor deliberately makes linguistic choices to the addressee’s benefits by adapting to the intercultural context, in order to first make himself/herself accepted by the addressee emotionally, and then make his/her ideas that are different from the addressee’s more easily accepted by the addressee, and ultimately realize his/her own communicative goals.The corpus for analysis here is comprised of four American presidents’speeches in China, including speeches delivered respectively by Ronald Reagan at Fudan University in 1984, William J. Clinton at Peking University in 1998, George W. Bush at Tsinghua University in 2002, and Barack Obama at Shanghai Science and Technology Museum in 2009. All of the speeches belong to intercultural communication. This thesis aims to elaborate the empathy strategy in intercultural communication from the perspective of Adaptation Theory, by analyzing the intercultural context of the speeches and the linguistic structural features of the speeches related to empathy that the speakers applied by adapting to the intercultural context. On the basis of the previous analysis, some suggestions on how to achieve empathy effect in practical intercultural communication are put forward at last. It deals with the problem on how to use languages to achieve successful intercultural communication, which will offer some advice on practical intercultural communication.
