Abstract

This paper generalized the development history of Pulsed Power technology and its application, and briefly introduced SG-III energy module. It summarized the development process of Marx generator, and the current research status of the compact Marx generator at home and abroad. With the advantage of great through-flow capacity to transfer the charge between two-electrode gap switches, this type of switch has been widely used in the high-power pulsed power supply system. Basing on the theoretical research and simulation calculation, this paper described a set of trigger system, which was designed for two-electrode gap switch of SG-III energy module, and has safe and steady operation with high trigger voltage, fast rise-time, low jitter. Tests and measurement was carried out to check the performance of this system.According to the corresponding theory of fast rise-time Marx generator, in order to meet the requirement of output pulse voltage waveform (Amplitude>120kV, Rise time<30ns), this paper describes how the internal structure and external charging and trigger system of Marx generator were designed. The internal structure design include the selection of components, the calculation and simulation of circuit and the electrostatic field simulation of spark gap switch. External charging and trigger module design include the circuit design and layout of component. With the calculation of main internal parameter, a simulation model can be create by ATP, through which the output pulse voltage waveform with and without voltage divider was simulated. The output waveform reflects the information about output pulse rise time, amplitude, pulse width, and so on. Simulation results show that the no-load peak amplitude of waveform is 154kV and rise time is 12ns, both of which meet the requirement. In the aspect of experiments, the results are: the charge voltage is 20kV,The amplitude of output voltage waveform is 140kV and rise time is 13ns, which satisfied the requests of SG-III energy module. Dry air was selected as the inner insulation gas inside Max generator, and the pressure is 110kPa. Stability experiments were carried out and structure of gaps was also improved so as to intensify the stability of Marx generator and avoid the potential insulation defects.
