Abstract


The psychological study of implicit memory has formed a frontier subject and studying boom in the world since the concept of“implicit memory”was put forward in 1980s. In the last several decades, the relevant research of implicit memory has made great achievements. Look back on the history and current research of implicit memory, one most significant characteristic is the discovery of the diversity of implicit memory, namely, the implicit memory itself also has many types. Under this background, as one form of implicit memory, serial memory is receiving more and more attention, while achieving a large amount of empirical research outcomes. Some scholars point out that the amnesia patients with cerebral injury can learn new movement skills, while fail to remember when and where learned these skills. The process of skill-learning depends on serial memory, which refers to one’s execution for activities with sequence. This ability of execution is considered or supposed as an expression of some memory, i.e. serial memory, which dominates the learning ability demonstrated by the amnesia patients. Taking the empirical research outcomes of serial memory as starting points and based on preliminary clarifying the unconscious nature of serial memory, this article points out the general sense of serial memory existing as a kind of unconscious spirit, through comparing and examining the research results about the implicit memory of prelinguistic infants and animal psychology, as well as the observed results and theoretical explanations of animal behaviors from habits experts, thereby expanding the theoretical connotation of serial memory in experience and concept. Based on this, this article discusses the theoretical meaning of serial memory as an unconscious concept, while also tries to discuss the genetic significance of serial memory as an idea of the unconscious with the relationship between conscious and unconscious, by means of Jacksonian Principle, which refers to theories raised by Jackson including“Evolution-degradation theory”,“The nervous system hierarchy level theory”,“Conscious concept”,“The most proper quality theory”, and so forth.
