Abstract


With the establishment of socialistic marketing system and the expansion of foreign trade, more and more domestic products are exported into overseas market. Meanwhile, the English product instruction translation becomes a necessary method for companies to foster a good and healthy company image and to promote exportation. Mechanical product is pervasive in our life, especially in the cross-border foreign market. This gives birth to mechanical product instruction translation, and naturally the research on mechanical product instruction translation also becomes the province of experts. Many have devoted themselves to this topic from various disciplines, such as semiotics, discourse analysis, aesthetics and cross-cultural communication studies.Mechanical product instruction translation falls within the realm of product instruction. So after the general review of the research on the product instruction translation and the instruction of Adaptation Theory, the author makes an overview about mechanical product instruction. Then a working definition of mechanical product instruction translation in the adaptation-theoretic perspective is given.This thesis revisits mechanical product instruction from a pragmatic perspective of adaptation. Jef Verschueren’s Adaptation Theory is a new-born but more encompassing theory. The author intends to reveal how, under this theoretical framework, different, yet interdependent constraints on the translation process play their roles in translation of mechanical product instruction.In the bulk of analysis, the author holds that Verschueren’s view that adaptation-making is to satisfy the communicative goals, has made some“deviant”methods theoretically justified. Then according to Verschueren’s Adaptation Theory, the author explores how adaptation theory applies to mechanical product instruction translations.In conclusion, Verschueren’s theory casts new light on the research of mechanical product instruction translation. And this tentative study will be conducive to mechanical product instruction translators and companies as well.
