Abstract

The modal adverbs are quite special in varied kinds of adverb. Its usage, distribution and the functional characteristics are unique, and therefore the research in the modal adverbs also receives more and more scholars’attention. Some scholors carry on the inspection to modal adverbs in a special book, some choose individual modal adverbs to implement the lasted analysis, and others study from a specific aspect such as structure or significance. This paper take holds in the modal adverbs in four big southern operas composing an important position in Chinese history as the object of study. From the following three aspects-the syntax, the semantics and the language itself-, I will conduct deeply the quantitative analysis of the modal adverbs in four big southern operas supplied with the qualitative analysis through a static description as well as some detailed explanations. The exact illustration of the usage of those words, along with the value in enriching dramas’ grammar research content, provides the reliable data for the understanding of different modal adverbs in four big southern opera’s utilization.This paper can be divided into six chapters. The first chapter is about an introduction of the four big southern operas and an explanation of research survey to drama and modal adverbs, the significance of my paper, the method of research, and finally the meterails originated.The second chapter is focused on the definition and classification of the modal adverbs in the academic circle. Finally we compose on the ground of Li Jie’s definition of modal adverbs, the range of the modal adverbs from three aspects. There are ninety-six single modal adverbs in four big southern operas, which can be divided into five branches:The accentuation affirms modal adverb, Imperative modal adverb, the extrapolation class modal adverb, the tactful kind of modal adverb and counter-question the question class modal adverb, and later a simple analysis of the modal adverbs in four big southern opera is to made.The Third chapter is four big south dramas the modal adverb unipole is used and connect category and quantity using made a simple instruction.The fourth chapter is centered on the syntax analysis of the modal adverbs in four big southern operas. A more detailed description and explanation of the modal adverbs in the drama is to be implimented in a way that modal adverbs is infulential in discerning sentence patterns and kinds.The fifth chapter is completed around the semantic analysis of modal adverbs in four big southern operas from the following two angles:semantic direction and characteristics. When analying semantic characteristics of modal abverbs, I will select the most representative modal adverbs to synthesize the necessary semantic factor of modal adverbs in the selected sentences by specifying the semantic characteristics and the usages in concrete sentneces.The sixth chapter is about the pragmatic analysis of modal adverbs in four big southern operas in three aspects:mark function, the appraisive function and the connection function.
