Abstract

"Requirements for College English Course" released by the Chinese Education Administration in 2007 pointed out:"college English teaching and learning is an indispensable part of college education, and college English course is a compulsory course for college students." Pre-major college education for the minority ethnic group students is of significant importance in Chinese college education. It is also a vital connection of senior high education as well as college education for the minority ethnic group students. English is a basic and compulsory course for the minority ethnic group students in their pre-major college education. Mongo is the major minority ethnic group yet the Han nationality constitutes the majority of population in the Inner Mongolian Autonomous Region. To the Mongolian pre-major college students in the Inner Mongolian Autonomous Region, pre-major college English education serves as the bridge and ties between their senior high English education and their college English education. How to cultivate the students’interest in English learning, enhance the students’competence in listening, speaking, reading, writing and comprehensive language competence and therefore pave the way for their future college English study through pre-major English teaching and learning is a serious task presented before all the pre-major college English teachers.The writer of this thesis discovered from her teaching practice in the Elementary Education Department of Inner Mongolian Normal University that the pre-major Mongolian college students are not competent enough in listening and speaking, especially in speaking. Even for the students who had received higher marks over 100, speaking is seen to be insufficiently developed compared with their other language skills, such as reading and writing. The writer of this thesis is trying to seek the cause and way out of the problem though her research by questionnaires, conversation with the students and literature review etc. She develops the idea of promoting pre-major Mongolian college students’ speaking competence through in-class co-operative learning and carries out her research with the support of the department.The writer of the thesis first addresses current situations and difficulties of the pre-major English teaching in Inner Mongolian Normal University through in-class observation, conversations, and questionnaires on students’ needs analysis of the students enrolled in the fall of 2008. She develops her research from a holistic view including the uniqueness of the Mongolian pre-major college student body, the teaching objectives of course, students’ needs, material evaluation, and teaching methodology etc. Based on the reflection of her in-class cooperative learning experiment, the writer of this thesis presents her hypothesis of carrying out out-of-class cooperative learning among Mongolian pre-major college students to distinctively promote their oral competence in English. She then verifies her hypothesis through a series of experiments.Some issues present themselves to be of significance in carrying out out-of-class cooperative learning. For example, although out-of-class English cooperative learning is the complement or extension of in-class learning, it is not act as a disguised extra in-class teaching therefore should not occupy too much time and leave too much burden on the students. Moreover, out-of-class cooperative learning should be interesting and challenging to cope with the students’ learning needs and the activities diversified.
