Abstract


Motivation is one of the important factors in second language learning. The importance of motivation results in abundant studies in this field. However, most of the studies examined the positive side of motivation that energizes learners, ignoring the negative side demotivation. In 1992, Gorham & Christophel carried out a research on demotivation in instructional communication. Then Chambers started demotivation research in L2 learning in 1993, followed by Oxford 1998 D?rnyei 1998Ushioda 1998 . In China, studies on demotivation were started in 2004 and most of them took college or university students as participants. The present study is an attempt to explore the demotivation in Chinese senior high school students. The gender differences and the student backgrounds with demotivation are also discussed in the study.In order to find out the answers to the research questions, two instruments were adopted: a close-ended questionnaire and a semi-structure interview. The participants of the questionnaire are 98 senior high school students in Grade 2 from Shanxi Yuci NO.1 High School. The results of the questionnaire are analyzed by SPSS. Factor analysis, descriptive statistics, principle component analysis and Chi-square test are employed. The study made the following major findings: (1) Amomg the nine demotivating factors in questionnaire, five factors demotive senior high school students English learning: learner-related factors, the compulsory nature of L2 study, school-related variable, attitude towards English and the influence of parents or others; (2) Among the nine demotivating factors, gender differences exist in six factors: compulsory nature of English study, school-related variables, learner-related factor, attitude towards English, attitude towards English community, influence of parents or others; (3) Students from countryside pay less time/energy on English learning than those from urban. The participants of the interview are two teachers of English in the same school. The interview is attempted to know the present situation of student s demotivation, reasons, and corresponding strategies. Four demotivating factors were mentioned: learner-related factors, parents-related factors, teacher-related variables and environment-related factor. According to the findings and the teachers suggestion, the author gives some suggestions for learners, parents, teachers and school administrators respectively.
