Abstract


Since the New Period, literary ideological issues have been causing disputes constantly, which emphasize the importance of Literary Ideology in the construction of today’s literary theory. "Literary Ideology", as the basic concept of literary theory, has been sensitive and vague since its birth. In addition, it has been endowed with various meanings in different times. Therefore, the related academic studies also become more complicated. As a basic concept, it is re-discussed in the new period, and the controversy on "aesthetic ideology of the literature" in the early 21st century in particular shows the foundational status and premised value of the concept, which plays an important role in the construction and development of literary theory.Starting with the evolution of ideological connotation, this article reviews different perspectives arising from the controversy on literary ideology issues, and focuses on the enlightenment gained from the controversy, so as to promote the academic study on literary ideology on a certain level. The main content includes:Section I: IntroductionBased on the academic study of literary ideology issues in the new period, this part further reveals the importance and value of research on literary ideology as a basic concept.Section II: The textThe text is divided into three parts. Part one. Mainly by illustrating the relationship between literature and ideology, the evolution of literary ideology, as well as the aesthetic change on literary ideological theory after the Cultural Revolution, this part aims to clarify the theoretical value and significance of research on literary ideology to settle the foundation for further discussion on the essence of literature.Firstly, based on the review of the relationship between literature and politics in the new period, the author mainly expatiates the historical and logical inevitability as literary ideology is mentioned again in the new period.Secondly, by reviewing the evolution of literary ideology issues, from Tracy’s "ideology" to the creative use of the concept by Marx and Engels, to Alehouse’s special imaginative relationship between literature and ideology and to Terry Eagleton’s theory of "literature and text production", this article provides a reference for the study of literary ideology in China.Thirdly, the aesthetic change on literary ideological theory studies the essence of literature on an aesthetic level, correcting the abuse of "organism" and getting literary study out of a single dimension.Part two. This part mainly reviews the controversy generated from literary ideology issues since the new period. The debate focuses on the following questions: whether literature is ideology or social ideology; which one between literary ideology and aesthetics should be dominant; whether literary is the aesthetic ideology or aesthetic form. This passage stresses the formation of literary aesthetic ideology, as well as its rationality and deficiency.Part three. Regards to the enlightenment elicited from the controversy on the basis of existing achievements.Firstly, the research on literary theory in the new period shows itself in a wide range of pattern, with penetration between unified and diversified pattern. But it is not scientific if the subject is not diversified or there is not a wide range of subjects. Since the unified pattern is in the dominant position, we should stick to the consolidation of aesthetic and historical opinions. Study on the essence of literature should be a combination of aesthetics and ideology, neither of which can be neglected.Secondly, any theory free to expand its own scope of application is not advisable. This kind of biased theory cannot reveal the essence of literature scientifically and completely. Therefore, regarding the research on the essence of literature, the adherence to the scientific unity of aesthetics and ideology is the right point of this article. Neither of them can be neglected.Last but not the least, literature is branded with times. People have different understandings on the essence of literature in different times. There is no doubt that they can be restricted by historical conditions and the development of literature itself at the certain time. Literature studies can only fall into different phases, but never eternal.SectionⅢ: ConclusionThe nature of literature is not determined by any single factor. The study on the essence of literature should be achieved from aesthetic connection, which means the structure between the aesthetic reflection and construction formed from aesthetic subject and object. Only the unification of reflection and construction can form the literary contents and objects and is actually the unique essence of literature.
